Secure your items

April 19th, 2009

First things first. It is never a good idea to keep a lot of money, jewelery or other expensive items at home. If you are in the habit, it is high time that you opened a locker account with the local bank and transfer your items there. A bank locker is not necessarily the safest place. It has its own share of security risks, but it is nevertheless safer option compared to your home. Fine, now let’s worry about the items that have to be kept safe at home. There are a variety of safes that are available in the market. Get the one with the number match and well be done with it. It would be better if the safe (or vault) can be attached to a concrete wall rather than kept in a wardrobe as most tend to do. For other special items like for example any Gold Medals or other such things it makes more sense to show them off while also protecting them. This can be done with the help of fiber glass. I have my gold medals that way in the showcase. There are many more items like your certificates, home papers and the like which can be put in a file and then kept inside a sturdy box. This will prevent them from getting damaged on account of fire or water. Coming to much more common items like compact disc collection you can have a well made storage bin for them. I have my video games collection (Wii Discs) placed in a perfectly made storage case which is not only easier to access but also protects them.

Best Bedroom furniture

April 18th, 2009

Furnishing a bedroom is an art in itself. The place is supposed to be calm, serene and inviting, soothing your senses and providing the get-away from the stress filled office. Home sweet home. But is there any extra care that is required for a bedroom furnishing. Yes, read on to know them. The wardrobe is one of the most important furniture in a bedroom (especially if it has an attached bath). If possible the wardrobe should be in a separate section between the bath and the bed so that dress changes can be done comfortably. They can have spot lights which light up on opening. The next in priority and importance is the dressing table. I am not sure if it is prevalent in all cultures, but a dressing table well made in the bedroom set goes a long way in bringing out the beauty of the room. It is better to have one which has a storage behind the mirror where not so frequently used make-up sets can be stored. Of course no bedroom is complete without the cot and the bed. Get the best and don’t compromise. After a day of hard work there is nothing like have a good rest in your bed. Now a days we have many options like variable softness (husband and wife can set their own hardness level of beds), special beds that help protect your backbone and so on.

Right Size for your Home

April 17th, 2009

Thanks for the opportunity to write about the good old days. The right furniture for your home needs to be of the right size too. In interior home decor, the most neglected aspect is the size of the room that the furniture is supposed to furnish. I have seen far too many homes with clogged up furniture. Sure they are of top quality but what with no space around you. It is a wooden jungle out there. Enough ranting and on to the subject. My personal opinion is that furniture should not occupy more that 40% of the room. It varies of course like in a bedroom the major furniture being the cot, that percentage might be extended a bit, but in other cases even 40 is too much. Minimalist approach which leaves behind good space for you to live is ideal. Even the sofa sets in the drawing room need to be considered very carefully. In many cases there are these 3 + 2 + 2 with the center table consuming the entire hall. In kitchens too the cabinets and storage areas need to be carefully planned. There are so many space saving furniture available in the market. You just need to scout for the ones that fit your need. But again you need not go overboard until warranted for. I know a couple who have a dining table that can be folded and kept in a corner - this in spite of having a big enough dining hall.

Corner Desk Makes a Small Room Feel Big

March 29th, 2009

When I first got my apartment, one of the main goals I had when furnishing it was to have a nice home office that I could do work in. I wanted somewhere that I could work on my papers and such. I needed a good place to stick my computer, but I also wanted space on the same desk so that I could keep papers and books on it to do hand written work if I needed to. I knew it was time to go shopping for some office furniture. What I ended up doing was getting a desk that had two pieces that fit snugly in the corner. Having the corner desk gave me a lot of space to play around with the rest of the room; I furnished it with a book case and a small stereo system with all my CDs to play music on while I work. When working in small spaces its definitely nice to have as compact a set up as you can, but having the corner desk made it feel a lot roomier than it would have; which in turn leads to a more comfortable work environment for me. All in all I would say that the office furniture I purchased was everything that I needed.
